I personally think that crew should be no larger then 15 people
do to the fact that everyone on the ship should have a personal responsiblity in the main areas of the ship and so a ship of 100 ppl couldnt pick  on one of say 5 or 10. (especially if theirs boarding in the game)

What do u guys think?

It depends? What If a Clan decided too have  a starship where all of its members could have their own quaters? What if like me, you want the feel of working on a huge starship?

There shouldn't be caps, but for player ships, there should be invitations to crew the ship.
Therefore that removes any needfor caps.
If you want too work on a small ship, then join one :D

I think there should be a minimum amount of players required to run a ship or else the ship can't fly.  Also, I think players should be assigned to ships - i.e., if im assigned to Ship A, I can only be on its crew, no one elses.  This does not mean all the players have to be on at the same time while the ship is flying around, there just has to be a minimum assigned to its crew.

I.E. -

Ship A is an X-Class starship.  The minimum crew for this ship is say 6, but it has like 30 maximum slots, excluding marines.  There are 10 people assigned to its crew, so it has the required minimum.

Captain so-and-so is on break, all his friends are gone for the weekend so he has nothing better to do but play STO.  He logs on, but no one from his crew is on.  Ship can't fly, right?  Wrong.  It has the minimum assigned crew, so NPCs fill in for the absent crew members as like officers of the watch or whatever, and our friend can play all he wants.

Ships are most probably going to be guilds (as said by the devs)..

It it likekly a ship could hold well upto 100 people...It should not be capped at 32 or somethin..

I think there should be caps for ships.

It makes sense that a ship cannot hold hundreds of people, especially if boarding is in the game.

A standing minimum crew, with PCs replaced by NPCs when offline, and a maximum number of people on the ship will force to people and guilds to organize themselves.

Also, 3 starships run by the same guild and travelling together is better then one, and would be much cooler.

Guilds should absolutely be able to have as many members and as many ships as they want.  The only thing that would keep them in check is the need for a minimum crew roster.

true but you wouldnt want all of your ships in a crertian area or you'd never get to a mission in time

A minimum crew has to be had but the maximum would be linked to the ships size so a defiant class ship could hold say 50 while a intrepid class could have up to 500 or summat (not exact numbers).  A clan/guild whatever its called on here should be able to have as many ships as they want but it would cost them more to repair damages and install new equiptment on their full fleet than a smaller clan/guild.  so without good resource gathering they have a fleet of useless ships.

Ships should be able to hold however many that class can hold in canon.

U guys make excellent points..on both sides.

but another reason i would like to have a a cap would be the reason that everyones going to want to be on the bridge at the controls...are u giong to have 50 ppl on the bridge? seems alittle disorganized.

lazy_jb that won't happen. Say you have a galaxy class. Your player crew is say 100 all from your guild. Or maybe lots lots more.

Only say 15 max can be on the bridge, thats if they have the rank or reason to be there. The others will be engineers, or security patroling the coridors incase there is the need to goto a transporter pad to board a ship or you are being boarded. Which then your the computer or tactical officer tells you where to go.

Between battles, tactical can be training their skills in battle or be tweking the weapons to make them stronger if you can. Or in Ten forward getting plastered.

Well its unlikekly a ship could hold 500...I dont think it owuld be possibel..but who knows..

However, Small ships...but made into 'fleets' eg a guild would indeed be 10x better than a just one ship one guild idea

ya like one guild could own like 5 akiras, 1 galaxy, a starbase, lots of smaller ships. Then have a personal ship like a soverign or something docked where the highest ranked player in the team is. which that person would be person commanding the guild and the starbase. But has a ship available for their personal business. They can of coarse say to that ship, you go recover this ship or you go fight here. I'm staying in the base. If the ship is at the starbase, it can provide the starbase with help if they are attacked.

I think I might be an engineer just so I could be there to build bases and/or ships and stuff.

It should be canon based. Also you can use NPCs you know.

Ships should be able to hold as many crew as they want.  Literally, even the Defiant had 4 decks and could hold a couple hundred in an emergency (including packing the hallways and engineering).  You'll NEVER get that many people together on a ship that small anyhow, so why limit it?  (other than to prove a point)

For those of you who think pvp boarding will be unbalanced by it, just add NPC security guards.  These guards would not be permitted to board an enemy ship, but they could repel aboarding attempt.  This would give the defenders the advantage.  (and don't make AI npc defenders useless, make them dangerous).  So, you would need live bodies to board a ship, and lots of them...

There's some good threads on boarding, go look em up.
