this hasn't been decided yet, or atleast we havent been told ourselves, there's a few threads speculating on it though, some good debating in that one.

I was all for an FPS style but after playing WoW i'm not so sure how well it'll work, what with latency and such. be a real bugger trying to shoot someone using a 56k modem

It will most likely be like the current MMORPGs where you select the target, start combat, and use different "special" moves.

Hopefully it's like your AO example.

Technical issues aside, I'm hoping for a Neocron-style system.

Anyways, it hasn't been decided. The development team is designing right now, so any input you have would be appreciated by them. It could also actually change the way the game will be.

They stated STO will be more action-oriented than other MMO's, so we are assuming Neocron style.
(Check out the offline* demo for an idea)
Although we are basing this on a few lines said in the FAQ and on the boards, this may be wrong.

Twitch/Stats in one smooth and cool system.

We (I) expect the system too use the Twitch style (doesnt always mean FPS) as most of us agree that it is the way forward and net connections in 07 (be serious, its always delayed, so 08) will be able to handle such with ease. (Currently in Bristol where I go Uni, they have released a 10mb broadband service on trial.)

*Yes, the MMORPG Neocron has an OFFLINE demo :O

I don't believe twitch is the way forward.  I think that's a step back and cutting out a large portion of the player base.  Twitch is a niche market limited to people with good reflexes and a need to blow things up.

However, I'll check out the offline demo of Neocron and see exactly what you're talking about.

Any evidence too back up that claim that its cutting out a large portion of the player base?

You'll be including people who play FPS, Driving, Action-Adventure, Flight Sim, Space Sim, Beat-em ups, sports games etc. as the minority in the player base.

Twitch is only cutting out playerbase currently because of bandwidth.  It was a system that was designed when people played on 56k.

I like full control over my character in combat, too crouch, shoot, aim etc.

True if you have medical problems you may not be as good at action oriented games such as arthuritis etc, but then again why would you be using a computer for gaming then (RSI)?

Try Neocron, you'll like it!  It has made leaps and bound interms of combat, and I never found it boring where as SWG just became a chore.

Well I am 13 and dont know what style you guys are talking about. Although I like both SFC3 and Bridge commander I would have to go with bridge commander. It is way more realistic and alot more fun. I think maybe you shpuld be able to choose the empire your for like SFC3 did but stay on the bridge. If their will be beta tester opening I would love to beta test it.

Welcome too the ST:O Board.

Well I will explain the two systems.

If you were aiming at a Monster with a gun, with a twitch system, you would aim, fire, crouch & jump etc. manually (EG Quake, Half-life, Deux Ex) etc.

The other system, you aim at a monster, right click, select attack command or type /attack in the chat box. Then you sit back and watch your character attack automatically. This system was used when bandwidth was an issue, no longer is that the case.

Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but twitch gameplay is the most supported in single player and multiplayer games (such as counterstrike) and the RPG option is favored by MMO's at the moment.  The next generation MMO's are expected too actually push this boundary away, giving you the control that single players games can offer.

Hope that helped.

Twitch First-person shooter games rely on the skill of the players.  There are two components to this: experience and twitch.  Experience comes from having done something often enough that you know what to expect.  Twitch comes from having fast reactions, good manual dexterity, and resonable vision.  Both experience and twitch transfer to virtual worlds, but neither ought strictly to be there: The knowlege and speed of a character shouldn't be that of the player.  Twitch is the more annoying, especially when coupled with client hacks or go-faster macros that make someone almost unbeatable.

The way I expect ST:O too work is that there will be twitch skills yes, but combined with RPG stats.

You aim at something, you shoot. You damage the creature for -16. When you shot, it took into the account of accuracy, damage modifers, stat accuracy (if your aim was off, this would compensate), ammo, etc etc.

When we talk about the style we hope ST:O will use, it merely means, more input from us (instead of being lazy and relying on leveling  hehe) combined with out skills and characters stats. This game will not be like Quake with 1 shot kills.

If the twitch system was invalid, why does SWG's new expansion use it?

Imagine your in a small corridor with friends shooting some NPC's, one comes up behind you.  Your freinds ask you too take care of him.  'Just a sec gys, I gotta cancel this one ... done, now too select the ... oh crap im dead'.

BeerMeal, we are not talking about how often combat should occur. We are talking about how it should be handled when it occurs. FPS does not automatically mean more combat. You can explore, acheive, and socialize in first person too, you know.

I'm not implying that FPS will mean more combat.  I'm saying there should be no aiming and shooting or anything at all that depends on player skill.  It should be completely dependent on your character's skill.

It's not like this at all.  You just hit Tab to go to the next NPC in most MMOs.

I expect this whole dice rolling pvp to be the downfall of yet another mmorpg. If implemented as such. Fortunately they can make up for this failure in pvp ship to ship combat. To me it is just a stupid and archaic method of fighting against other opponents. I don't care how "revolutionary" people say it is. Give the people who plan on going head to head what they want and stop listening to people who may use it maybe once because no matter what they are too scared to pvp.

Especially when new factions are added and you get klingons boarding your big beautiful starship. Oh gee lets get this guy click.wait for itdamn I missed ok click..wait for itdamn. Oh yeah thats sooooo exhilarating. Give me a break!

For this game to succeed combat must be carried out like every other fps. Sure you can figure in things like accuracy etc but making us fight third person constantly pointing and clicking is just lame.
