i have seen guilds ruin starwars galaxies on some servers - i agree you should have a chance to serve on capital ships etc without having to be in one.. :)

;)

Sorry it just irritates me something fierce to hear all of this PK reluctance! OK now on to Guilds..

Guilds are awesome in online games I agree, however who needs a guild in this game? I cannot see one good reason to have guilds!! its not like a group of Starfleet officers could take off and do just anything they wanted anyway! they are under strict regulation!! You cant mix and match factions either! So just WHY do we need Guilds?

You need custom Player Made Factions to do this! otherwise you need to have something along the lines of a final fantasy 11 linkshell! In this case ONLY does it make sense! In Final Fantasy 11 it didnt make sense! there should have been guilds! but in this case Faction members cannot be going in and out and doing their thing against orders at will!!!

By the way! I hope noone gets offended by me tonight, im not trying to be loud and angry! I really just miss Player made storyline that the players can indeed actually act out! and So many games are lacking it 100% Its aweful.. mmo's are just multiplayer network cooperative console games/chatrooms! without PVP flexibility is taken away! Realism is taken away! Glory is taken away!

And once again! WE DONT NEED GUILDS! if they are already in the game take them out immediately because not ONCE in any of the series were there any of these types of guilds!! And I do not mean trade related guilds either! that is a differant type because what you are suggesting is really a Clan! and perhaps the Klingons have Clans... but not many races do and they are very race specific! if they are implemented they should be very carefully done... they could really cause conflicts with factions!

otherwise! I could bet the lot of you are just drooling over the idea of this games future release! I know I am! *shakes hyperactively* I could so go into a cornholio skit right now!

Peace!,
God bless,

No doubt this is still a very popular issue.

However, it does seem that the vast majority are in favor of guilds.  The degree of power/influence that these guilds will have in the game seems to be the real issue here as for the majority view.

To those who do not want guilds at all.  Yes, I agree guilds may not make sense in Trek.  But that is only from a certain point of view.  In a strictly Trek reality based game there would be no guilds.  However, there is no such thing as a game that is that "real."  Gameplay must take priority over trek realism at some points.

In that sense guilds make sense for many reasons.  A lot of people just plain out like them.  They are an established part of not just MMO gamming, but online gamming in general.  They create bonds between players that cannot be creates by pick up groups of random encounters.

A lot of players will want the ability to play beside their friends at all times from day one of launch.  They will not want to wait to be assigned to the same ship or anything else.  I know of guilds that move from game to game with the same people.  I am one of those people.

Yeah, some guilds may be power hungry and want to dominate.  but those are not illigitimate goals.  Maney individual players have those goals in mind.  Guilds just are better at it that the solo player.  Being the most dominate force on a server may not be a goal for some, but for other that is the purpose of their gamming.

Myself I like to create communities.  A guild is the best way to do that in an online game.  So in my view the game should support guilds.  Guilds are no more destructive to the game than an individual can be.  Speaking for the guilds I have enjoyed long term membership in, we try to foster and boost the appeal of the server.  If you look at SWG a great deal of extrea content is created by guilds.  PvP tournaments, fishing contests, entertainer contests, races, battles, etc.  An individual could not do that.  Guilds foster good relations and enhace the content.  They can be destructive in the wrong hands, but the benfits far out weigh the risks and extent of damage.

For those who hate them, has some guild in the past activly griefed your gameplay?  I mean really how destructuve are they?  What has the worst guild in any game ever done to ruin your game?  I do not think it can be that bad.  Guilds can do much more good than harm.

mmocritic, I can appreciate your interest in PvP (or PKing, whatever you want to call it).  However, you are in the minority.  PKing will kill an MMO.  The vast majority of players won't stand for it.

All I have to say is look at Everquest.  EQ is perhaps the most successful MMO ever made.  It has something like 30+ non-PvP servers and 2 PvP servers.  So do the math and figure which play style more popular.

EQ was so popular because it was better marketted... I mean Jeebus man! sony put it out did it not?! SONY!!! you know! the Playstation ppl! The most well known electronic entertainment device company just about known to man! Of course EQ was most played! And I hear tons of people telling me EQ has little other purpose but to find a party level up, ... and repeat! some try to role play! But gee you cannot now can you?! I am in the minority because I am a veteran for years of these following games:

Ultima Online
Graal Online
Nexus TK
Ragnarok Online
Starwars Galaxies (not years... but a little time was spent here)
Final Fantasy 11 (same as galaxies)

Plus ive beta tested so many other games... the only ones that ever had feeling in them were IMO

Ultima Online
Nexus TK
and Graal Online

these three had either Less limited PVP or Unlimited in Graals unique case... but there were a few small sancutaries.

UO if any of you have played it has TONS of items to collect! Weapons and Armor are just about infinate in combination possibility! In Fellucca(Trammells alternate pvp dimension) Eventually you can become a Pirate sailing the seas and raiding ships! or you can create a force of hero's to kill the "Reds" aka the murderers! otherwise the alternate universe consisting of Trammel and a the rest of the world that is not pvp whatsoever! and it is done very well! most ppl dont worry about ganking unless they want to! That despite its poor gfx has managed to be almost as popular as EQ for like 7 years! With no real change in its engine!

Nexus TK is a game that is based on Ancient Korea that has been liscenced out from korea to a smaller company franchise. It has a smaller play base and many flaws in its in game legal system! But it has some really fun Clan events for storyline, and player subpaths (after you level to a certain lvl in your "Job/class/path" you can be accepted into a player subpath after some trials they make and then "guided" into that subpath and gain their powers!;) ... Their PVP system is flawed!! Due to the level system there is an insanely unfair stat based advantage! But they have "Carnages" (massive team pvp battles) and the unique ability to level your character INFINATELY! you lvl to 99 then sell experience until your just too tired to ever hunt again!!!! Their wars are very neat too! As long as your at LEAST lvl 99!

PVP cannot kill an MMO! Lack of PVP kills MMO's!! Balanced PVP like I said is Good! Extremely Limited or Non excistant PVP is suicide to an MMO! unless your Sony or Square and can get ppl who know nothing about mmo's to play based on your marketting budget! :P

But yes I appreciate your dislike of PVP Beermeal! And if the Vast majority of players won't stand for it then I guess its back to smaller time mmo's for the likes of us who like actual feeling involved in a game.:(

Nice to see some posting about one of my games - this is Kismet, BTW (If you were around for the year+ that I was the Game Director for the game).

It should be noted that Nexus TK's PvP system was only in instanced situations.  The Carnages were held in an arena, people volunteered to take part in them ((Consentual)) and there was absolutely NO penalties for taking place in them.  I believe the Devs have hinted at a similiar system.  There will be limited PvP - not non-consentual PvP.

Oh, and I didn't think the justice system was too flawed - other than it requiring the actual culprit to be online for sentencing - but still a good system compared to others I have witnessed. ((Sorry, just a little pride there)) :)
