[quote] The U.S.S Rapture?
1) wouldn't you be a little concerned if the rapture hadn't arrived by then? 2) if the rapture had occurred by then, zephram cochrane must not have been a good man, nor the founders of the federation.

Well… Rapture can be defined as “ecstatic joy or delight; joyful ecstasy” which was more what I was going for. Though the Archaic definition is “to be caught up or the act of carrying off.” Which if you think about it is an excellent definition for the name of a Starship.
To answer your first question, I would be a little concerned if the rapture (the return of Christ for His Church) hadn't occurred by the time we had left the solar system, but God never told us we wouldn't leave the solar system. It's just implied.
Secondly you said that Zephram Cochrane and the founders of the Federation must not have been good men if the rapture had happened already. So let me take this moment to correct a common misunderstanding of Christian doctrine. There is no such thing as a good person according to the Bible. Man is evil both in nature and in deed as evidenced by his thoughts, feelings and actions. He lies, cheats, steals, blasphemes, covets, hates, lusts, etc... the list goes on and on. Man needs to be taught to do what is right because it is not his nature to act or do rightly. Even though he has a rudimentary understanding of right and wrong, as evidenced by a universal sense of morality and conscience, Man will still not follow that understanding because he is selfish. That's why governments exist because without something to enforce law and justice Man would quickly slip into depravity. So if Christ came back looking for “good” people He would find none, even in the church, since we all sin daily (relatively) in thought and deed. When Christ does return, He will be looking for people who have repented (people who have changed there attitude about God and sin, meaning, they no longer love their sins but love God.) and put their trust in Him for the salvation (redemption) of their souls.
*steps down of soap box* Sorry got a little preachy there. This is, just, an important thing if one wants to understand the Gospel. We need to know that we are terminally ill so that we seek out the cure. We need to know we are drowning so we’ll reach for the raft. We need to know we are full of sin so that we can cling to the Savior. If we can be good on our own do we need Jesus Christ? Nearly all other religions are counting on the fact that they can do enough good to please God. This, to me, resembles a bribe. We can’t bribe God to overlook our sin. That would make Him unjust. The debt/fine we owe God is too large for us to pay but Christ (God in the flesh) paid our fine with his own life so that He could be both just and justifier of those who believe (those who accept what Jesus Christ did for us). Then our salvation rests on the mercy and grace of God rather than our sad performance… Hey how’d I get back up here? *steps down off the soap box once again*
The U.S.S. Apostle (meaning sent one; messenger) would make a good Starship name to don’t you think?

Sorry bud, I didn't mean to scare you off. I can understand not wanting to discuss doctrine on a site devoted to Star trek. I just love to talk about both Star Trek and Christ so both come out from time to time. I hope you know that I would not be offended by you having a different view or belief.
