You'd probably have to allow for both. Nobody is going to want to have to wait at spacedock for an engineer or tactical officer. Plus you'd have that problem with everyone wanting to command. "What? but I was the navigation officer last time!"
If you could come in with 1-6 players and have the NPCs fill in the slots, that would be great. My only hesitation would come from the traditional MMO pickup group where you get some guy with no skill at the helm and you're doing barrel-rolls around the system as the Ferengi take pot shots at ya.

| Quote (Borg_Unicomplex @ Sep. 10 2004, 6:21 am) | | You cant just think in terms of what might be cool for you...when designing a game...you have to think of what the Majority wants....Multiple PC controled ships would be chaotic to say the least! |
Ill admit it has the potental to be chaotic with players that dont know what they are doing, but on the other hand it does open up a lot of roleplaying angles for people who want to get the experiance of being part of a ST style crew.. Also a well organized team of players would be able to control a ship to great effect. In every MMO to date a well orginaized team of players can accomplish great things working together even with complex tasks assuming the players are skilled enough. And belive me teams of players would specificaly group together to learn and train together to gain those advantages that it would give. Now keep in mind my idea (as posted above) would not require you to have other players on your ship.. If you dont wanna use other PC's to help control your ship you wouldnt have to.. I just think the advanges would be significant for a group of players that did.

w/e speculate all you want...Single controlled ships...with NPC stats to aid you...is the most logical choice...less fights...more gameplay...and less work...

Yeah, but why should a Enterprise style ship be avaliable too someone who has a large amount of money and who grinds away at proffesions?
Large Player controlled ships should be for those who have friend etc, where as shuttles, delta flier's (their mass produced new counterpart lol) should b for 1-4 + cargo and not need NPC's.
Also, player skill will be required rather than NPC stats.
Come on, can you imagine hailing a ship? No answer? Scan for life signs, 1(in the holodeck, what a sociable soul), how many drones (npc's)? 5 in brigde, excellent I just got me a galaxy class ship. 1 assualt team just beamed aboard after weakening shields, 3 mins of fighting and done. (Human will always be able to beat NPC's)
Large craft should be sought after and always revered when seen as a status symbol of people who work together as a team.
Imagine seeing the Klingon Warbird 'Tyr' (player ship), you have met a few captains of larger vessels who have warne dyou of this vessel. It has never losta battle, the crew inside work together as if borg, blah blah blah. Now that is wahat MMO's are about, not quick fights and solo-play.

You can hail a ship...it's the other player or NPC controled ship that would respond...
And lets say you can tell the number of crew aboard enemy ships...All that would be used is for tactical runs on certain systems...Anything more is becomeing to complex...your makeing this game bigger than it can be!

All I know is Id rather come into a fight with 6 other friends in 6 ships rather than one ship with 6 other friends.

Power Gamers, those who's sole objective is to be the richest, or the more powerful person. They spend hours along fight to increase their level rather than playing with other people.
3 years ago, 2001 games looked pretty basic compared too know, 3 years from now with 64 bit processing standard the world is possible. I bet now you name it, they can do it.

hehe, i've never understood that? Why be the best? Ive often got into arugements in other MMo's because of this.
I use them to play a game, which the main emphasis is to be part of a team. I always thought too be the best was rather pointless as so much time and effort would go into it that you could never go down the pub or even out? lol
You see it all the time, people on for 12 hrs everyday? I just ask the question, why?

This is how I see crews working out:
Since everyone starts out at a low rank, ships will start out being controlled by NPCs (until there are enough higher ranked PCs to control them). Crews will mainly consist of various personnel running around a ship, all following the orders of a Captain - if, as you say, everyone wanted to play as a Captain that basically axes any idea of Helm, Science, Secuirty and Medical Officers, don't it? As you progress in rank, your options improve. Get assigned to better ships, or - if you wish, take command of other ships.
I figure it would be along these lines: Lieutanant - Shuttle, Runabout Lt Commander - Escort (Defiant, Miranda), Cruiser(Sabre, Steamrunner), Science (Nova) Commander - Explorer (Akira, Ambassador, Excelsior) Captain - Galaxy Class, Soverign Class
Only Captains would permenatly have their ships, the others would only be temp assignments (therefore giving those who want to command a lesser ship a reason to continue progressing up the rank tree).
I don't see the problem you guys are talking about - It's a command structure, the captain gets to decide.
