Lets see what you want.

As a casual gamer, Id rather not have to rely on other players to operate a ship with me. Usually the time it takes to build a group(crew) and go adventuring is more trouble than its worth.

I'd like to see ship's under your control.....Crew AI, that you build stats and skill through a D&D type system..

What's the point of having an MMORPG Star Trek Game if you don't play it with others?! :P

Idealy I actually would hope for a dyamic system that could accomidate both.. Say if you were going solo you would be in overall command of the ship and it processed your orders threw AI NPCs (thier efficency tied to your skill level maybe) and you would be able to take over a specific task when needed but only able to control one ship system at a time.. (weapon targeting, navigation, damage control ect)  But if you grouped up with several people they would each be able to control a specific ship sub system full time (with NPC's for the systems that you dont have people for).

...fleets of users each with thier own ship is good enough...

Multiple users on one ship...would just be caos from minor disagreements!

I think im just failing to see how it would be fun being on a ship with others just watching an engineering panel.

It would be nice if both playstyles were supported.

Well the advantage should be obvious, a ship with several PC's in control of it would be much more efficent than a ship that is controled by a single PC using NPC's to delegate specific tasks..

And example to pull from some other MMo's would be the difference in the efficancy of a pair of hunting partners vs sombody fighting with just themselves and a pet (NPC that they indirectly control)

It's not that hard for a single person to Control one or more ships....Go play Starfleet Command series...mainly 2 and 3....it's easy, very easy!!

See, im not sure I agree with that analogy.

Using the same example it would be like multiple people controlling one character. One person moves the avatar, Another chats, Another casts spells, etc..

I just think it will be very inefficient.

One way to look at it that it would be like Bridge commander on a more specific scale... With just one person controling weapons with out having to worry about trying to manuver (or issue the commands to the NPC while trying to do so themselves) that person would be able to focus fully on getting the maximum output of damage from thier ship's weapons.  Obviously to get the most out of this type of tatics would be best utilised by people that are used to using "raid" type tatics where everybody is responsible for accomplishing a specific thing *shrug*

But what if 90% of players want to be In command...and only 1% want to be at helm....thats just conflict of interets and it would not work...

I'm a strong Role Player and would prefer to role play with other people than an NPC.

You cant just think in terms of what might be cool for you...when designing a game...you have to think of what the Majority wants....Multiple PC controled ships would be chaotic to say the least!

Then assuming my idea was actually used (ha fat chance of that *grin*) the player would retain the option to control the ship solo and command the ship threw thier NPC suboridantes for the various systems.

Thats a nice idea...but not needed extra programming...What happens in a Multiple PC controlled ship...and the Command wants to go to NPC...he just fires his crew...and all those people are outta ships...until they find new??? No Multiple PC ships just wont happen...
