ok so you must understand how excited i am for this. i am an avid long time star trek fan and i consider it probably the richest fictional universe ever.

however i must voice my trepidation over the proposed "action" theme of the game. you see, as much of a trek fan as i am, ive never enjoyed a single trek video game. thats because i dont feel theyve ever captured what star trek was about. sure, some were good clones of other better action games. but really who cares. star trek isnt about action, at least not when its at its best. star trek is about exploration, moral dilemmas, and most important, good ideas. sci fi and otherwise. star trek, more than any other sci fi franchise, is a "feeling" for lack of a better word. you know i like enterprise, but whats the main complaint, that it doesnt "feel" like star trek.

so with that said. will a mmog with a heavily actioned slant "feel" like trek? i sadly say no. ok so star wars galaxies was a major dissapointment. thats because its the star wars license! noone wants to do someones hair in the star wars universe! people want to light sabre battle and dogfight. thats what star wars has ALWAYS been about. its popcorn. and the developers misread the allure of the franchise and it didnt do well. i dont want the same to happen to star trek.

here is the thing. i want action! i want space battles and phaser contests and the whole thing. i just dont want it BASED  on that. its the star trek universe. its genes vision. its so much more. dont you think?

Well, hopefully they won't make the mistake of making it too focused on action, especially if there's not going to be much in the way of PvP (maybe holodecks) at release - there's plenty of action in Trek, but it's not the be-all and end-all.

They did, however, mention that there would be puzzles and ship maintenance and stuff like that, and as long as there are enough places like quarters and mess halls to build my character as well, I'll be happy.

Well, the fact is that action sells.

Hopefully they can integrate action, MMO, RP and most importantly...FUN!

Action can mean a lot of things...

Action could mean a plasma conduit overloading, and the engineering team repairing it while the Medics help those that got hurt.  *shrug*

I think he meant the more well know and larger action, like space battles, and phaser attacks, such like that.

On that note, emphasis on action is alright with me, so long they don't ignore or leave out other segments that make ST what it is.

Indeed, hopefully this just won't become some kind of warped cousin of Elite Force, I like to imagine a Starlancer kind of universe myself, where we will be able to choose a path to take, where we can be successful without ever having to actively participate in 'action sequences' and so on.

But some people are going to want that, some people are going to want to be able to spend all day repairing defunkt plasma manifolds, I am sure we'll all be catered for ;)

I think we will see a heavy focus on Combat Action and Adventure with STO. Now I know for some of you, fixing plasma conduits all day could be a lot of fun but for most people that will make the game boring VERY fast. STO is going to be dependent on Combat action (faster than most mmos) and Adventure elements like Exploration to be successful in the MMO genre. I think we will see a very fast paced game that takes mmos to a new level (Imagine Elite Forces meets Bridge Commander).

im just saying that sure not everyone wants to fix plasma conduits all day, but you must admit of all the franchises in the world, star trek is the one where more than your fair amount WOULD want to fix plasma conduits all day. star trek fans dont usually want to blow stuff up. they want to just, live in the world. im just hoping they strike a happy medium or else it will get boring VERY fast. if its too action oriented people will play it for a while then drop it for their favorite action mmogs like quake and stuff like that. it just needs to feel like a real life to get people coming back month after month. i mean lets face it, as dorky as this sounds, it needs to be the type of game where people get married in(like everquest). it needs to feel like a virtual home. even the best action games get boring fast.

and besides i want to get a job tending at quarks.
