I agree that a monthy fee will lessen the audience (I probably won't get the game because of it, even though I love Star Trek, am an avid gamer, and enjoy RPGs), but I understand the reasoning behind it.  It costs a lot of money to keep the servers required for an MMORPG online 24hrs a day compared to other online games that are peer to peer.

I can see you don't no much about MMORPGs. Most of them are well worth it! MMORPGs cost 10-15 dollers a month.

If you think a monthly charge is bad, obviously you've never played a decent MMOG.

The monthly charge not only pays the server fees, it keeps out quite a few of the wankers who would infest the servers just for the hell of it, IF it were a free game.

I've been through more than half a dozen MMOGs that had monthly fees, and I know this to be true.

If the game is good enough I wont mind the monthly fee. If it is as bad as its predicesor trek games then.... Well you get the idea.

A monthly fee is not a bad thing, especially when some mmorpg's give you the game for free such as eve online

What's more important is,  that the game is fun enough you dont feel like your throwing money in the trash can

After 6 months of eve online,  i'm starting to feel like its a trash can lol

Paying is unavoidable with an MMORPG of this scale...they have to keep it running which means monthly fees..And the system requirements for this game are going to be through the roof...

But I can handle it!!!  :)

A Monthly fee =
- Regular updates (bug fixing)
- Regular Content updates (new stories, ships, species each month)
- A good customer support service
- In game help from paid employee's
- Expansion packs
- A nicer community (look at Free Runescape, its awful)
- A better game overall that will only get better.

No Monthly fee =
- Childish l337 style community
- No updates
- Any bugs at release will not be fixed
- Little to no customer service
- maybe only one server (so you could never get on as it is always full)
- $5-10 extra money in your pocket each month

I know which I would go for and its not the extra money

Err, sorry too disapoint you but Blizzard's World of Warcraft has a free BETA, but too play Wow you will have to play $15 a month!

The single player games, yes they do not have a monthly charge, but their MMO does.  Then again, name one game that is single player with a monthly charge?
