While the greates importants in a ST world would be the storyline, PvP plays a vast part in the realism and relating it to the shows and movies we have seen. In every show there is a story and fighting, most of them that is.

98% conflict with non-Starfleet individuals.
That would not be possible among a player-base composed of Starfleet personnel.
I do not think PvP is crucial to the success of Star Trek Online. Is it crucial to "Slice 'em and Dice 'em 3000" or any other generic fighting mmorpg? Sure. This, however, is Star Trek. If people want nothing more than to shoot phasers at one another and taunt other players, they can go play the myriad Star Trek shooter games with the mindless action that already exist.

Yes, the game would be extremely short without some versitile pvp....
Players shsould be given the ability to buy a starbase, the starbase would then have a rotation of shield frequence which would allow the base to be vunerable everyday for a bout 2 hrs...
At that time..ENEMY players can then defeat the defenders in ships outside.(pvp).once thats done...the players would board the starbase..here u would have PlayerVPlayer human pvp...there would be specific mission Objectives..that would have o be fulfileld...either to takeover the abse or to destroy it..

PvP is interesting for combat oriented players who want to test their skills again intelligent adversaries, but necessary? No
I do belive there should be PvP, but it might not come immidietly in this game, might need an expansion or two first. Depending on the exact time of the game it should be possible to play some kind of enemy of the Federation (Klingons, Romulans, Cardassians or such) and be able to go into contested space (PvP zones) to openly take part in PvP. However, it must be obvious to players who dont like PvP what these areas are so nobody will end up beng killed by a fellow player against his will.

no.. I disagree...PvP area zones just dont work....they didnt work in SWG atleast and there a big PvP community there..
basically...There should be an option to 'decalre' yourself to do pvp...and 'undecalre' (with a timer) to not to pvp...
PvP should be available everywhere...
BTW: If the game launches with crappish PvP Im pretty sure thatll affect subscriptions..

Interresting 50/50 split here at the moment.
Im in favour of pvp as even with good games like COH they become stale and repetative without pvp in some aspect.
PvP gives another aspect to the game that PvE just cant give. This game also has huuuge potential with the licence and I would hate to see it goto waste on a basic game that folks find no longer fun after a few months.
Im sure this wont happen but hey its happened before.

In MMOs that I play PvP is consetual.. like you need to ask the other player to agree first.. Some of you seen to take PvP as 'I click attack on this guy and attack him' why would it be like this?

I think ST would be an acceptable environment in which to have a PVP challenge system...
And of course if you're on opposing factions and those factions are at war, well then, that's a different story! Then you're gonna wanna keep to your side of the neutral zone to stay out of a fight.

That's the point - sure PvP would be great, but since everyone is going to be playing for the Federation you sorta hit a wall there.

Why would one play the Federation/human/vulcan...when one can use a cloak if rom/kling...use a batleth...or captain a Warbird? Balance will be required for this game...thefederation would have a LESS TACTICAL advtange..klingons have a tactical advantage and roms...spying etcetc.... As long as balance is defined and each race/faction is DEFINED people will want to switch/start with other races other than feds

SWG is making lots of money, and it still has crappy PvP, so I dont think the PvP has to be good. But good PvP is of course preferable. However, I never liked the "declared" system, why can I shoot at some Klingon ships and not others? There is simply no reason for it, while contested space would be a explainable reason why fighting is going on there. PvP zones work well if they are big enough. The one things that failed in SWG was the battlefields and that was becuase they were buggy, not becuase they were a bad idea. Large areas with interesting PvP oriented content would bring players there, the areas could be set up with internal "mini games" such as capturing of bases, capture the flag like scenarios. All you have to do it make PvP content and people will come. Having a PvP part of the world works just fine in UO.

At launch, the game will only allow you to play as Starfleet (and I'm going to guess, forever - I don't see there being a large enough user base to support multi-fraction play).

I think it is important but I at the same time we dont need it although it would make the game alot better.
I am thinking we can have 2 types of PvP one type being normal fighting until one ship runs away and dies and the other being a simulator where neither ship dies but it be like in the series where they have tactical simulations this way even people in the same organization could have a friendly fight now and agian
