PVP crucial to the success of this game?

I think player versus player content/combat is really important to the success of this game.

Surely you have to cater for both sets of players, but I read on the news post, that there would only be some pvp content, I think this needs to be given a higher priority.

I know a lot of my friends, love online fps game, when I got them to play MMORPG, if the pvp was limited, they quit and got bored very quickly.

Agreed.

PvP should be the most crucial part of any 1st person mmorpg in my opinion.

PvM is ok for a while, but mobs do get boring after a while.

Who said "no"?

Are you going to be anonymous and boring, or are you going to share with us why you do not think PvP is important?

Actually if you paruse the numbers of the online games, PvP servers are very unpopular. The numbers on those servers are so low it is a waste of game bandwidth.

Feel lucky any games even provide this anymore.

Seriously pop onto the PvP EQ servers at the same time you check the PvE servers, you'll see for yourself.

**and yes I said No**

Show me some backup to this claim, because it is absolute nonesence.

I have backup to my claim that PvP is cruacial to 1st person mmorpgs.

Neocron, DOY, Face of Mankind, Matrix Online
^ Are all popular new games based around PvP...

If you take out the lvling up and grinding, then there is nothing left except for pvp and roleplay.

Unless of course PVE content is continiously added and updated, but that is a hell of a job, not sure they are gonna be able to keep up.

In a Star Trek universe, I think PVP would be fantastic, just not sure how they would be able to implement it.

Also EQ has always been a PVE type of game, not entirely renowed for its PVP.

it doesn't really matter what's popular with other mmorpg games...however with the Star Trek universe pvp is needed...I'd be happy though if they had pvp in the form of space battles only and planet missions ect was all pve....

Of course in every game, theres the boring no-skill who is scared of play vs player combat, and sticks to fighting automated non player characteristics for the whole time they play...

Do you really want to be working on skills in Starfleet Command and have have an Admiral walk up and vaporize you?

The UFP stands for United Federation of Planets, I don't think Starfleet attacking Vulcan (wouldn't advise this I am sure hehe) would exactly fit into the Star Trek Universe either.

Let's not get all defensive here either, the boards are only a few hours old guys.

PvP combat is the beauty of star trek. Depending on what race and occupation you are would determine how important PvP could be. For instance, If your a Ferengi, combat might not appeal to you however if you were a tactical officer, PvP would be very inportant. The key is how it is implemented in the game. I think that there should be area's in the game where combat just isn't allowed. Ie. crowded spaces like a market, a hallway, class, the bridge etc.

Crucial? I would say no.

Important to longevity? Yes.

If there is a war going on, depending on exactly which date they pick, then it would suit that different races were fighting each other and pvp combat exists.

Not sure if they should generate a new timeline or should fit this game into a current timeline of events. I think creating a new timeline of events is much more fun and realistic as then different races would be able to decare war and make alliances.

Might make the game more fun.

But a war couldn't last forever. And Star Trek is alot more than 2 warring states. Exploring, Discovering and inventing are all what star trek is about. not to mention getting yourself out of sticky situations.

The point being that there are a ton of ways to implement PvP without having to resort to all out war.
