Acoording to one of Newton's law when an object reaches a speed it will remain going that speed un til interupted by an outside force, and in space there is no gravity therefore an objects interia would continue to carry it at that speed. If all this is true how come in the shows the engines need to be constantly running to maintain the speed and if the engines go offline then the ship stops.

becuase the warp engines generate fields that extend into subspace that rub against each other propelling the ship forward at FTL speeds. if the engines stop producing this field they drop out of warp.

the impulse engines are just fusion rockets with a space-time driver coil which generates a sub-warp cochrane field around the ship reducing it's effectice mass allowing for greater acceleration. due to conservation of momentum, if you were to suddenly turn off the driver coil, the ship would slow down substantially (practially stop) from the "added" mass.

thrusters work the way you would expect where they just coast along on minimal power using thruster's so maneuver, there are actually a few episodes where they do this.
