Alright, look,I know this sounds ,somewhat, crazy but I was actually thinking that maybe in fact ,it is possible to create a shuttle.I know that NASA and other companies are already trying, but their problem is that they are doing things little by little. They dont even want to advance much.I was wondering if anyone here had any ideas on warp, time travel, and building a small shuttle, about the size of a mini-van....what are you opinions?

is that a duck i hear. sorry its just a quack.
Just kidding, good imagination but is almost certainly impossible and warpdrive and time travel are defiantly impossible even with some giant Tek advances it will be many centuries before we are even near any kind of faster than light (or equivalent) travel.

Actually, Nasa has been doing research on warp drives and that sort of thing (systems that alter space), they don't seem to think its impossible.

If NASA got unlimited funds, i'm sure they would be able to build a shuttle...

There are about 5 teams around the world who are not goverment related who are trying to build the next shuttle. There is even a ten million dollar prize for the first vessel to achieve certain objects with their design. I'm more interested in deep space vessels. The interest in shuttle development is such that there will likely mutiple designs in the next decade.

One of those companies is called Scaled Composites. Their craft, White Knight / SpaceShipOne will be launching on 21 June 2004 to try to reach suborbital flight (100 km). If they succeed, then they will probably win the Ansari X-Prize shortly afterwards. These private companies trying to win the prize are not trying to replace NASA's current space shuttle. These ships are designed to hold a few passengers, and their flight times are very short. The purpose of this competition is to encourage development of relatively inexpensive spacetravel. With these small steps, hopefully the space industry will grow faster than it has since the late 1960's. If you're interested in the X-Prize, check out http://www.xprize.org

So the White Knight will launch in 11 days from now? Do they have a homepage?

http://www.scaled.comAll the information and photos are there. The setup of the spacecraft is pretty sweet. White Knight is the "plane" that will carry SpaceShipOne to a certain altitude. Once there, SSO will be released from WK, and fire its engine to reach 100 km. Also, SSO had a nasty landing a few months ago. I don't think you can find pictures of it on Scaled Composites website, but search elsewhere for it. I'm surprised this topic hasn't been on the boards earlier!

Faster-than-light travel is possible, but I don't see us accomplishing it in our lifetime. Remember that just 60 years ago supersonic flight was thought to be impossible, and they had the scientific evidence (and the crashed planes and dead pilots) to prove it. Even with Chuck Yeager's first flight, he almost bought the farm. All it took was a simple fix (sweeping the airplane's wings back 45 degrees) for supersonic flight to be viable and safe, so I predict that we'll someday be zooming around at warp speeds.
