I wonder if phasers also work on a principle of waves.
The Wide Beam Dispersal modesuggests they do. If it's a wave, it can be accomplished by narrowing the exit distance of the phaser. There's also the fact that they change the frequency of phasers to try and penetrate shields.
The only thing I really find that opposes this is that phasers produce a distinct light colour, and a distinct sound. Which would be produced by two different wavelengths.
