I once herd someone say, "each time anything goes through a Transporter, the original is destroyed and a perfect copy is made. So this means that you die when you get transported, and a clone takes your place." (Not exact words, but from what I can remember) I don't think this is correct, but it is possible, how could you prove otherwise? Still, i believe you simplly get transformed into energy, and placed at a different place, such as a planet. My Theory is that. I'd like to here some of yours. If you died...I WOULD NEVER USE A TRANSPORTER!

Dying is such a harsh word.  You are simply broken down to you subatomic level while you are being scaned then the information is sent to a site and you are recompiled.

Hi

I understand your point Chris. That is what annoys me most about transporters. Even though it looks arduous (but then it is sci-fi) to scan/decompose/beam/recompose, I could admit it for inert things. After all, anything material is only a big jigsaw, and given the right means to do so, I think that it can be deconstructed and reconstructed at will. For living things however, I find the whole thing very difficult. It may be possible to transport the body, but what about personality, thoughts, and life as a whole? One needs a jolly good Frankenstein to achieve that! :;):  Even though it is possible, then there must be an interruption of life just before the transport in itself.
I certainly would not try such a device at all!

You guys have a point, but I think that since it transports and breaks down everything, your personality, memory and thoughts go with you. so you may be 'dead', but it is still you who takes your place.

Anyone remember that episode in TNG when Reg thought he had Transporter psychosis or whatever it was? Well there's a part where you see from his perspective, and he never dies. You just get surrounded by this weird light, and then it disappears and you're somewhere else.

Hi

It can be right if memory and thoughts are something material. By no mean would I try to theorise about where life lies in, but I see the brains being perfectly transportable although the electric business in it being not. If memories are kept through a complex electrical network or by a chain of electrical events, they might not be reproduced straight out of the transporters. I think of it like it is some kind of device that is powered on then transported. I would say that after its re-creation it would be unpowered, because it needs a special initial "spark" to run. I also think that beaming a flowing liquid would lead to re-create a still liquid. Otherwise, the transporter would have to scan the particles as well as their speed, direction, etc... If the scan proceeds like a picture taken, it will reconstruct what is on this picture. And that leads me to think that is it can transport memories, then, one could be scanned before doing something dangerous and then be re-created in the state previous to an accident. That would be useful too to erase memories of what happened between the scan and the transport itself.
Ouch... that is getting really weird and complex!!!  :O

Actually right now we are experimenting with something in which the orginal is destroyed and new one made at the wanted location
the transporter doesnt do that. it transforms you to energy and sends you.

Matter can be created and destroyed. Matter is merely a corporeal form of energy.

Yes, you will die by stepping into a transporter..  A transporter is like a fax machine, except that the original is destroyed(killed), before the clone is reassembled at the other end.

Like the episode Simultude...clone has all the memories of Trip...but he's not "Trip"...same thing with Transporters...that's why...NEVER go into one.
It is also possible for a Transporter to make two clones...like in Riker's case...both of them do not know the other one existed...before they met up...they have no telepathic link...which means you lose your 'soul' the first time you get in a transporter.
