Some say there's 8, some say there's 9, some say there might be 10 or more.

It really depends on your definition of the word "planet" :)

They say there's a possiblity that our asteroid field/ring was a planet :)

yes, its from old sumeran beliefs that 10th planet (or 12th planet if you count sun and moon) was homeplanet of the annunaki, an alien race that created humans. there are many ancient writings from old sumerans, asyrians, babylonians about this topic. if you are interested in this subject then you must read book called the 12th planet by Zecharia Sitchin, he also wrote a dozen of books on this subject, interesting books, i have them all.

Neptune, Uranus, and Pluto were all discovered quite recently (in astronomical time).  The rings of Uranus & Neptune are VERY recent discoveries.  A 10th planet (beyond Pluto) has been speculated at for a long time and remains a possibility; but JUST a possibility until science or probes can determine one way or the other.

And many scientists are putting into doubt the classification of Pluto as a planet.

There has been study about the gravitational field from this planet. There's slite difference in the orbit of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto... they show a variation... and it has been confirmed by various astronomers ec.
But at this time there isn't any conclusion about this variation... maybe this planet is very massive but very distant to the sun... and therefore we can't see him... :)

admDoubleD, i have seen some studies about this topic and they are very interesting. i agree with you,if this planet exists then it must be massive otherwise it would be caught by the gravitational field of other planets.  :logical: if it exists than for sure its very distant, in the book 12th planet, there was an ancient writing of old sumerans and there was written that the 12th planet had orbit of 3600 years. but for now we cant be sure if there is another planet, only time will tell, of course if we use it for exploration   :;):

Once again, the definition of "planet" is up for debate.  When does something cease being a planet?

Is Pluto a planet?  If Pluto is a planet, why is Pluto's sister planet, Charon, not a planet?  etc..

Because Charon is a moon, lets define some terms

Planets orbit stars, next moons orbit planets, so if Charon orbits Pluto (which it does) then its a moon, because Pluto orbits the sun (star) and not another planet its a planet and not a moon

The smaller object (Charon) is always classed as the orbiter and the larger object (Pluto) as the object orbited, so Charon is the moon and Pluto is the planet, because Charon orbits arround Pluto, not the other way arround

size/mass has nothing to do with it (within reason, this rules out metiors in the kupier belt), to be a planet it must also orbit in a roughly circular/slight oval path, this rules out comets

ROFL ^above^ :p

I thought the main problem was whether to define Pluto a planet or a Kuniper object, so any further objects beyond Pluto is abit shakey in terms as either a planet or kuniper object.

Well, just because its very CLOSE (relativly speaking) to the Kupier belt doesnt mean its in the belt, so if its not actually in it then how is it a kupier belt object?

Actually, you are wrong.  Charon does not orbit Pluto in the traditional sense.  The two planetary bodies orbit EACHOTHER; the center of gravity in the system does not lie inside of Pluto, but somewhere in between the two bodies.

What if they were the exact same size?  Which one would be planet and which one moon?

Your definition of the word 'planet' is flawed.
