Artificial blood

Blood donors may soon be out of a job. There are a number of chemical companies that are coming up with viable alternatives for blood! Many different brands are looking for FDA approval. here are some things to look forward to.

Some of these artificial bloods are much more efficient at picking up and releasing oxygen then our natural brand. Researchers could actually take a lab rat, dunk it in this stuff, and wait for it to "drown". The blood would flood the rat’s lungs, but would also pull oxygen out of the air. It transfers the oxygen to the rats lungs, thereby keeping it alive.

The artificial blood also keeps a lot better then regular blood. An ambulance may even be able to carry supplies of it on board instead of having to rely on blood banks.

With the enhanced oxygen tranfer abilities of the blood, think of what kind of physical limits we will be able to break! With an adequate supply of glucose or other energy donating sugars in the blood, the limiting factor for cell respiration usually boils down to oxygen. With this blood, fatigue could be greatly reduced. One needs only to keep downing those carbo bars to stay active.

I can’t wait for this exciting new technology to come to fruition.

That’s REALLY interesting! I wonder whether people with this enhanced blood would be able to breath oxygenated water and live?

Fish survive on the bubbles in the water, but of course being cold-blooded they don’t need nearly so much energy. But even if humans couldn’t breath "natural" ocean water, it might be useful for deep-sea exploration to be able to breath liquid water that had extra oxygen added to it artificially: a diver in a suit that supplied you with such water to breath instead of gaseous air should be able to stand much more pressure, since his body would have no compressible gases inside it. Does that sound reasonable?

I would guess that the first beneficiaries of the new technology would be sufferers of blood-diseases such as sickle-cell anemia: the risk of replacing their blood with this artificial stuff would be balanced against the risk of retaining their own blood, which eventually becomes deadly to them. Sickle-cell anemics with replaced blood might become the first humans to explore the very deepest parts of the oceans ...

It must also have the ability to move antibodies to be effective. It sounds very, very promising!

The reason many people are not satisfied with their natural blood is because, all to often, a lot of it ends up splattered somewhere and he can only receive replacement if there is an eligable donor nearby. This blood was created as an ermergency replacement primarily. The fact that it has superior properties is a secondary factor. This blood joins dialysis and pacemakers as a means to give people longer lives when the lack of these things would mean a death sentence.

Uhm, let me think... Maybe because the only people who will have any use for this blood is those who would die without it! Some ’wonderful life’ - you’re mad for suggesting they can be happy with their "natural" blood.
