Dilithium crystals

If two atoms of lithium were chemically bound together, then by nomenclature the compound would be called dilithium. If it was in a crystalline state, it would be a dilithium crystal, now wouldn’t it? I know that there is a substance called dilithium, with a chemical formula of Li2. Let’s see, lithium has an atomic number of 3, so it has one atom in its outermost energy level. So two atoms of lithium could come together and form a non-ionic molecule with a single bond, couldn’t they? Each electron would compliment the other, and the compound "dilithium" would exist in an artificially diatomic state. And since lithium is a metal and it exists as a solid, it could very well be crystalline in form, couldn’t it?

Even in Star Trek, dilithium is an artificial, manufactured substance, found naturally on only a few planets in the galaxy, and then only by a freak act of nature. If lithium can as you say regulate the flow of matter and antimatter, then couldn’t dilithium do it even better than plain lithium could? It would make sense then that for high-warp speeds starships would prefer to use the artificial compound dilithium rather than natural lithium, which is rather soft and probably couldn’t take much stress without cracking and wearing out very quickly. Kind of like using leaded diesel instead of unleaded fuel, isn’t it?

The forced-matrix formula is:

26 dilithium21 dialloscate 1:9:1 heptoferranide.

My formula is incorrect based on this boards inability to accept chemical structure operators.

Check out pg. 275 of the Trek Encyclopedia, if anyone has it. The behind the scenes explantion of Lithium crystals is a great example of how canon information can be changed to fit the "needs of the many."

Basically, some bloke wrote a few episodes of TOS in which Lithium Crystals were used to power the Enterprise’s engines. Scientific Advisor Harvey Lynn thought, "no, that’s stupid. Let’s change it to Dilithium instead."

Hmm. if they changed information once (info that appeared on-screen) they could easily do so again, where it may or may not concern certain newer TV shows.

Dilithium crystals don’t exist (to strict science). They only exist in a single molecule. [I just thought I throw that in]

I know what you mean. I have had the same difficulties / problems doing the same thing.

That doesn’t mean that crystals can’t be manufactured.

An amazing theory! But consider this; Have you ever heard of trilithium? Speaking under your terms, that would do the best job in a warp core. But from my perspective, you wish to end up exactly where you started? Nothing?
