Patrick Connan is a French graphic designer and illustrator. Connan designs movie posters and is the founder of Barbarian Factory, for which he creates illustrations inspired by his favorite entertainment properties. Recent subjects have included The Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, Gravity, Jurassic Park, Jaws and the films of Arnold Schwarzenegger. It was Connan’s colorful Jaws screenprint, which appeared at the Hero Complex Gallery, that first garnered him attention on the international alternative poster scene.

Early in his career, Connan spent more than two years in the advertising world. Then, he “finally found his way.” He has been working the last seven years as an art director at the most prominent movie poster agency in the French capital. During this time, he also formed Barbarian Factory, which allows him to continue creating his own, private work as an Illustrator.

Connan lives in Paris.

How is your Star Trek artwork similar to or different from to your other works?

This is by far the most ambitious work I’ve ever created. It is in the vein of the recent projects I’ve done, like for How to Train your Dragon, but way more detailed. I wanted it to be special.

Can you describe your artistic process in creating this artwork?

This poster was entirely drawn into the vectors software named ‘Illustrator’ from a sketch I’d done after watching The Wrath of Khan about 10 times. I use a Wacom Cintiq to draw with precision directly onto my screen.

How quickly/easily, or not, did your piece/concept come to you? And how long did it take from start to finish to complete the piece?

The concept came to me very quickly. I watched the movie and I knew what I wanted to do. I had to re-watch it several times afterwards to find the perfect characters’ attitudes and the key moments to round off my composition. It took me hundred of hours ... I stopped counting after 200.

What else about your piece do you think Star Trek fans should know?

There are some hidden references in it...
